Last night, I re-watched M. Night Shyamalan's SIGNS after probably fifteen years without thinking about it.
I still got chills at the same moments, the tension compulsively crept into my guts to the point where the jump scares worked again almost as well as they did back then.
This film had a profound effect on my brother and me. It became such an obsession that we probably shortened the life of the VHS tape to a critical point (it was always the same tape rented from the local video club).
The length of the shots, the minimalist acting, the rhythm, a whole range of effects that still guide my creative process, whether graphically or musically. I dream of the day when I will pick up my camera to pay tribute to the emotions this film still makes me feel.
